U.S. Department of Labor

The Department of Labor oversees many important laws and regulations that affect our everyday working lives. Many people contact our office with concerns about wages, overtime, and Family & Medical Leave Act. Please see the below commonly asked questions for more information.

How can I get information about federal laws involving overtime, work hours, and other employment issues?

The Fair Labor Standards Act regulates many aspect of how employees are paid in this country. Please read the Department of Labor’s “Handy Reference Guide to the Fair Labor Standards Act” for more detailed information about federal labor laws.

How do I take advantage of the Family and Medical Leave Act?

There are many common misconceptions about the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993. In general, you will need to talk to your employer about your eligibility to take advantage of the Act before you take time off; the law affects all public employers but only private employers who have 50 or more employers.

Please read the Department of Labor’s FMLA Fact Sheet for more information.
