WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last night, Representative John James’ (MI-10) ‘TELEMH Act’, co-sponsored by Reps. David Schweikert (AZ-01) and Don Davis (NC-01) passed the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously. This bipartisan legislation would revolutionize access to mental health care by ushering in transformative changes to Medicare reimbursement policies for mental health services provided via telehealth.

Rep. James said the following after final passage of this legislation:

“I’m grateful that my bipartisan TELEMH Act passed the House unanimously. At a time when mental health needs are soaring, and the accessibility of care remains paramount, this bill marks a critical step towards realizing the full potential of telehealth in delivering vital mental health services. By broadening access for telehealth-based mental health services, we will help to address the hopelessness crisis in America. I am grateful to Representatives Schweikert and Davis for joining me on this legislation.”

Rep. Schweikert, an original co-sponsor of this legislation added the following:

“Telehealth remains to be one of the most efficient methods of expanding access to care,” said Congressman David Schweikert. “The morality of offering mental health services through digital platforms will continue to revolutionize care for our seniors, and I thank Reps. Rep. Don Davis, another original co-sponsor, also said the following:

“Congress must take decisive action to improve the delivery of mental health care services, particularly in underinvested communities across eastern North Carolina and rural America,” said Congressman Don Davis. “Telehealth is one of the most powerful ways to achieve this goal. We must pass this crucial legislation that will bring real and lasting improvements to our healthcare system.”

Additionally, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers had the following to say regarding the passage of this bill:

“Telehealth has proven to be vital for increasing access to health care across the country. I thank Rep. James for his leadership to strengthen Medicare and ensure patients get the care they need.”

This legislation now heads to the Senate for a vote.
