Schweikert says extending Trump-era tax cuts will be a top priority

Newly reelected Arizona Congressman David Schweikert said extending tax cuts made in President-Elect Donald Trump’s first term will be a top priority at the start of his new term in January.

“We’re trying to figure out what that would do to the economy,” Schweikert said. “And also, how do you not kick working people in the head with something that’s already law, it’s already gonna kick in?”

Schweikert, who’s reelection bid was called by the Associated Press on Sunday night, said that without an extension, taxes would increase by trillions of dollars over the next decade.

“You have to deal with the fact that the economy today is different than it was seven years ago,” he said. “And you’d be doing policy that would carry you out, hopefully, through the next decade.”

But Schweikert said extending tax cuts must be balanced without adding to the national deficit, while also keeping the tax code up to speed with evolving technology.
