Rep. Schweikert Applauds Committee Subpoena of VA Secretary Shinseki

Washington, D.C., May 8, 2014— Rep. David Schweikert (R-AZ) released a statement following the House Committee on Veterans Affairs announcement to serve Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki a subpoena:

“I applaud the Committee’s action to find the truth behind the devastating news and reports of medical failures and misconduct at the Phoenix VA Medical Health Care Center,” said Schweikert. “For the VA to operate efficiently, transparently, and at the highest level, there needs to be a rebuilding of faith and trust in leadership.”

“Our veterans deserve answers and this response is the right way to get those answers.”

Earlier today, the House Committee on Veterans Affairs voted and signed a subpoena for VA Secretary Shinseki to provide all communications to the Committee in regards to recent reports and allegations detailing medical failures and administrative misconduct said to cause 40 deaths at the Phoenix VA Medical Health Care Center.

Congressman Schweikert asked for the resignation of Phoenix VA Health Care System (PVAHCS) Director Helman and top leadership at the Phoenix VA Facility in a letter to VA Secretary Shinseki in late April. Secretary Shinseki put top three PVAHCS staff on administrative leave late last week.
